How lucky is crime investigation?
Many crime fiction stories are solved by luck, by coincidence, by interrogation and by confession. These are not often available in investigation of real crimes and the CI has to rely on search for evidence and analysis. This can be haphazard or systematic and efficient. Inductive method of psychological profiling
The premise is that if certain crimes committed by different people are similar, then the offenders could have similar personality traits.
Deductive method
This method is slightly different. From a thorough analysis of the crime scene and the evidence left at that scene, the profiler is able to construct a mental picture of the unknown offender. Information about the victim is crucial, for the more one knows about the victim, the more one knows about the offender. Types of evidence
Direct evidenceof an occurrence is perceived by a witness using their senses.For example: a witness who testifies that he saw the defendant shoot the victim.

Circumstantial evidenceconsists of a fact or set of facts which, if proven, will support the creation of an inference that the matter asserted is true e.g. a fingerprint at the scene of a crime.
